Perusall is committed to providing a secure, seamless experience for institutions, instructors, and students. As part of this commitment, and in alignment with current IMS Global standards, we are beginning a full transition to LTI 1.3 from LTI 1.1 across all LMS integrations over the next year. This update affects how Perusall connects to your institution’s Learning Management System (LMS), and ensures stronger security, modern authentication flows, and improved privacy protections for all users.
Only Perusall adopters and institutions that are still running active LTI 1.1 courses and/or haven’t integrated LTI 1.3 will need to proceed with the following action.
Why we’re making the change
LTI 1.3 is the current industry standard for secure LMS integrations. It offers:
- Enhanced security and modern OAuth2-based authentication
- Improved data privacy protections
- More reliable, future-ready integrations
- Greater consistency across LMS environments
Transition Timeline
To support a smooth transition, Perusall will phase out LTI 1.1 in two stages:
June 1, 2026
- Perusall will stop issuing new LTI 1.1 keys/secrets.
- Existing LTI 1.1 integrations will continue functioning.
- Limited exceptions may be granted by Support if absolutely necessary.
January 1, 2027
- Full discontinuation of LTI 1.1 support.
- LTI 1.1 connections will no longer function, and the underlying code will be removed.
- No exceptions will be available.
What this means for your institution
If your institution already has LTI 1.3 enabled, you’re already on the right path. The next steps include:
- Ensuring new Perusall courses are created using LTI 1.3 only
- Migrating any remaining LTI 1.1 courses well ahead of January 2027
- Encouraging instructors and instructional designers to check which version their existing courses use
There is no cost associated with integrating with, or transitioning to LTI 1.3.
Using LTI 1.3 exclusively ensures that your instructors and students receive the most secure and seamless integration experience possible.
How to transition courses to LTI 1.3 from LTI 1.1
We’re published a complete step-by-step guide to walk instructors and administrators through the process:
How do I transition my Perusall course to a LTI 1.3 integration from an LTI 1.1 integration?
This guide outlines how to identify an LTI 1.1 course, how to rebuild or relink it through LTI 1.3, and what changes instructors can expect during the process.
