Pedagogically grounded

We never use AI just for the sake of using AI. Instead, we use AI when our educator-led team believes it provides pedagogical value for your course.

Safe

Data security is paramount and we have extensive protections in place to ensure that your data is handled in accordance with our strict Privacy Policy.

Private

Student and instructor data is never used to train our models and we never share data with any AI model providers or tools. All models are run inside a closed system (our private cloud computing environment).

Optional

Instructors always have full control over whether and when to use AI in their courses.

Helping instructors grade with thoughtfulness

Automatic evaluation of comment quality

When turning on automated scoring in your course, a supervised machine learning model automatically evaluates comments and questions for thoughtfulness, quality, and effort.

Perusall suggests quality scores for each comment and question posted by students, which instructors can optionally integrate into the student’s score for the assignment. Instructors always have full control over whether and how these scores are used, and can override them at any time.

Adjustable scoring components in Perusall allow for the pre-trained machine learning model to score comments and questions for thoughtfulness and effort. Saving instructors time.

Save time with AI-generated checkpoints

Instructors can add in discussion prompts or quiz prompts throughout an assignment to engage students further in their reading and video assignments.

Preview, edit, or discard text that is generated by AI in your course. Instructors are always in control of their courses.

Instructors can add in learning objectives to their course to assist AI discussion prompts for their checkpoints in their assignments. These are fully in the instructor's control.

AI Assessment Scale

Apply the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) to your assignments to communicate to students the role that AI should play in your Perusall assignments. Customize the levels to match your course, and add assignment-specific instructions so students know exactly what’s expected before they start.
