The Norton Guide to Equity-Minded Teaching authors on Social Learning Amplified, Live!

Our live events included a Teaching and Learning panel discussion, two Social Learning Amplified LIVE podcast recordings, a Keynote event, and a Student Panel.

During the Social Learning Amplified, LIVE podcasts, Eric Mazur sat down with authors to explore two timely classroom topics: equity and mental health. Authors, Flower Darby (University of Missouri), Isis Artze-Vega (Valencia College), and Mays Imad (Connecticut College), talked about their book, The Norton Guide to Equity-Minded Teaching, and authors, Rob Eaton and Bonnie Moon (Brigham Young University - Idaho) joined Eric Mazur to discuss their book, Improving Learning and Mental Health in the College Classroom.

In the Keynote, Dr. Zeynep Tufekci (NYT columnist, Pulitzer Finalist; Columbia University) and Eric Mazur had a lively discussion on generative AI and ChatGPT. The Teaching and Learning Panel hosted over 200 attendees, and the students at the Student Panel completely awed us on how to best utilize Perusall in their courses!

Presentation highlight

Danielle Steele's presentation, The Bot Wrote My Essay: Creating Assignments to Avoid AI Plagiarism in the Age of ChatGPT, had the most engagement at this year's Exchange. Congratulations, Danielle!

The Bot Wrote My Essay: Creating Assignments to Avoid AI Plagiarism in the Age of ChatGPT
Danielle Steele, Georgia Highlands College, USA.

With the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT tool, educators face a new challenge in student writing: avoiding having a robot do students' homework for them. This presentation looks at how ChatGPT can be used to in essay writing and how to create assignments that prohibit students from being able to use the AI source to complete their homework assignment. In addition, the presentation considers how elements of good pedagogy, such as scaffolding assignments, can not only help to limit use of AI writing but also purchasing essays from online sources and other forms of cheating.
